We reached Kununurra after a nights stop at Halls Creek, a small town catering for the aboriginal communities and Access to the Bungle Bungles national park (all roads in closed due to this mythological Wet season we'd not seen). Halls Creek seemed an odd little town but for reasons unknown appeared to be expanding rather rapidly. The natives not really helping much, just seeming to wander deliriously and sometimes felt quite intimidating.
Coming into Kununurra town we passed over an impressive hydro-electric dam. We then went to the visitors centre to get info on campsites around town, when we came out the car was surrounded by Aborigines looking like a scene from Dawn of the dead. I'm not sure what the solution for the problem is but something needs to be done.
After checking in we found out that the roads to our intended destination were closed due to flooding and maybe so for an unknown time. On the upside we had a nice pool and everything we needed on our doorstep. I found it quite exciting, our journey was in the hands of mother nature, it just added to the adventure. We befriended a few other travelers at the site, all having in common the fact that for now this was the end of the road until the forces of nature deemed it permissible for us to pass.
We slept(quite well in fact, i love beer) not knowing what the day ahead of us had in store. As soon as i woke i sought information on the road condition, the road was open..."we got ourselves a convoy" i shouted in my elation. I really don't know why i was so happy. We had planned to stop here for the night so the fact that the road was cosed the day before had no bearing on us. It had however been closed for the 5 days previous and some people had been waiting this long. Anyway we were off and it felt good!
Gem's Note: In Kununurra I had the pleasure of feeding some of the locals, local wildlife that is. I had over the course of three hours 21 mozzie bites, 9 of which were on one foot. I can report however that none of those 21 bites were on the areas I sprayed mozzie repelant....clever b*****s!
