Morning came (too soon) and we headed south. There were a few options for our destination tonight. However, a national park where the famed Duck Billed Platypus frequented came out number 1. We stopped for lunch in a town called Finch Hatton (very British in name) for lunch and had possibly the nicest apple pie I'd ever tasted (Nan I said 'possibly' it's been a while since I've tasted yours) The second leg was only 20km or so but the terrain was a little challenging. A steep, swerving climb to the town Eungula, made memorable by hair raising drops atop which perched the campsite giving magnificent views down the valley. By far the best view we've had from the van so far. It was approx 5k to the National Park and after making friends with the campsites friendly 3 legged so-called guard dog we took a drive. We got to the car park and took the short walk to the viewing platform where we waited expectedly for nearly two hours. By then time we'd concluded that it was all a conspiracy by the Nat Park and the platypus didn't actually reside in this area. We then heard form a couple that they'd seen some at a pool some 10 min walk down stream. We took the opportunity and walked to the pool knowing as soon as our backs were turned the platypus form the area we'd been waiting in would suddenly appear and do the fandango (if anyone actually knows what the fandango is please be sure to tell me the next time you see me). It was worth it, we saw them at the pool with a quaint waterfall running into it, quite the picturesque little spot. The platypus would surface every couple of minutes to a torrent of camera flashes then go back under water (until his epileptic fit went away I'm sure). They were a lot smaller than I'd remembered (possibly due to the ones in Sydney aquarium being a little overfed) but they were awesome little things nonetheless. An egg, laying poisonous duck/ferret/beaver/otter mammal…where else but Australia!
