Im not quite as good at downhill mountain biking as I assumed I would be, 1600m up a mountian, at cloud level, we started the 35km route down, which was going pretty well, until my bike got bored of me and decided I needed to say hello to the floor. My knee got on very well with it too, I needed a bit of time to recover before we headed into the jungle for the trek so we went to Pai.
Its been described as part of the "hippie trail" in Thailand and after a very very long and windey mountain road (764 curves, so the t-shirts claimed), we arrived in Pai! Lots of people complaining that it wasnt what it was like 10 years ago, but still a tiny, chilled out riverside town, full of VW camper vans and people with flowers in their hair, listening to folk music and reggae - "finding themselves".
We stayed in a bamboo hut on stilts by the river, sitting on logs on the evening next to a fire and Em went swimming with an elephant - after he decided to roll over and drop her into the river :)
We went to find the Long Neck Tribe, yet another windey local bus journey - 4 hrs, into the clouds and back down, squashed and uncomfortable and spent a night at Mae Hong Son, next to the border with Myanmar, before returning to Pai for another relaxing evening. Got some interesting photos and Em got to dress up, even with the metal long neck thingies they have to make their ...erm...necks long. Tomorrow we go trekking.... stay tuned for more tales of the jungle, insects and white water rafting and more heffalumps!
