The two Triumphs made easy of the final 234kms from Glendaline to Hanmer Springs and after checking in at our motel we couldnt wait to go the final 3kms to Forest Camp and the rally.
The gateway had a security check that ensured we had prepaid our $80 admission fee, we had.
They sent us to administration where we collect our rally pack.
It was somewhat small
an orange bag
a stubbie holder plain no branding
a small torch
a rally patch
a NZ rally patch
leaflets with offers of no value
No T shirt they were waiting for us for another $25 each.
No meal tickets pr breakfast tickets they were extra
but we could get a free coffee, tea or milo drink provided you made it yourself.
We had missed the only ride so contented we browsed the bikes parked sround the camp.
I spied the trophy table and as entries didnt close until 2.30pm I looked over the various options and decided only one was suitable Triples from Hinkley (the current site of Triumph manufacture) so duely I rode into that parking area and did a quick clean up. Not an easy task after a long trip in rain, gravel roads and road grime but the Red Triumph always comes up pretty.
I spent the rest of the afternoon talking and looking at bikes as no organised activities were on and no trade displays not even a Triumph NZ display?
They announced the prize giving would be in the outdoor stage area so I sat with other hopefuls in what now was very cold conditions as only 40mins ago we were happy in singlet and shorts but that was when the sun was out.
My category came up I waited then as they knew no owners only rego numbers were given oout so I again waited then they announced the winning rego number Wtxxxx b***** not me as my plate begins with numbers. The winner was a immaculate 2002 Yellow & Black 955i.
I stayed for the onther classes as I had good company around me one from the US (Chicago) and a couple from the UK.
The category list finished and they went onto local classes, hard luck stories etc etc it was getting late when the announcer conscious of the time said we have one prize left that should have been announced first that being an award for Hot Bike of the show. We didn't get a rego number he said but it goes to a Red Sprint ST with many world travel stickers if that is your bike please come up.
Well before he had finished I was beside the compare as I knew there was only one Red Sprint ST in the show MINE!
After photo's etc the time to get back to the motel was overdue but alas many wanted to know the Sprints lifestory and I was happy to chat and well chat.
The Rally may not have lived up to expectation but a trophy is now coming home from a World Rally for one very happy Red Sprint.

Christopher Sorry they took the photos. I was there by myself but later will show
Greg Lane Get Laura to take your photo sitting on your bike with the trophy. Would be a great addition to the blog
Ken Spall interesting comments from you regarding the WATOC rally. But as one of the rally organisers I do wonder about your "Peoples Choice" trophy. There was in fact no such trophy given out. You did receive a "Bring out the hot one's" trophy, a very nice Swiss Army knife, but you certainly did not receive any other trophy. If you're not happy with the trophy that you did receive would you please send it back.
Christopher Hi Ken thanks for the Trophy correction I was unaware of what Bring out the hot ones meant so tried to use terms more easily understood The blog is corrected to reflect the correct name.
John As has been pointed out earlier there was no people,s choice trophy / category. Reprehensiable that one would made a fictitous trophy and place it on display. Disresectful that you could not show or acknowledge the actual prize your where awarded. Again if you are not happy with the trophy please send it back as this was provided by members of WATOC over and above the national prizes on offer at the rally.
John Witherington Christopher are you going to acknowledge or show the actual prize your where awarded ? Again if you are not happy with the actual trophy please send it back as this was provided at the expence of WATOC / TOMCC NZ Otago Southland Chapter members eg not funded from the proceeds from the rally it self. TOMCC NZ President.
