After two World Wars and the Holocust you would think Germans would moderate their thinking and arrogance but my true experience speak otherwise.
With only a short ride from Prague into Germany and with wet weather most of that distance I arrived early at the Ahorn Hotel.
I enquired about early check in or of my room was now available. Without even looking she said No.
I asked about luggage storage No
I asked about using the indoor pool to fill in time.No only for hotel guests she said?
I asked about food as I hadnt stopped for lunch.
The bar or restaurant she said.
I went to the bar it was unattended. I checked the menu on display-only liquids.
I did find the restaurant, only a cleaner there did not open until 6pm!
Did find another outside restaurant there you could have whatever you liked as long as it was drinks.
I saw the village was only a km away so I jumped on the bike and rode into town.
Found two restaurants open, neither would offer any language assistance Deutsche only! and walked away.
Eventually did find a local bakery/cafe. The first lady was abrupt Deutsche only! but as I was leaving a young lady came running and said I will help. She was most helpful and even managed to get the tea bag on the side.
Using my Gold membership of Hotels.com.au a web based booking site I contacted my personal consultant and cancelled the four night booking and rode 100kms to a new hotel.
Upon arrival in the car park the owner beckoned me down to park undercover at his car port. Maybe they are not all the same I thought at the time as I took my first set of luggage off and went to my room.
Well the room has a rule for everything eg you cant walk in the garden without first seeking permission!
Returning to the bike the owner had a bucket of water and pointed to my bike dripping on his pavers. You wash! So I duly hurled the whole bucket of water under the bike,he looked and said I get another you wash bike. Well as I was still in my riding boots and it is World Cup time his bucket found a goal well his hedge and I walked off telling him to wash his own pavers next time.
At check in he had shown me a piece of paper with three times on it 1759,1800 & 1801 only 1800 was not crossed out.
So excaltly 1800 I was outside the dinner room. The owner pointed out the front and said beer first. I pointed to my wrist and said No its 1800.
He walked past and out the front, thinking he might have set dinner on the porch I followed. No again he offered a beer. Again I said No.(His minibar price was 7E and Aldi was 29c) He opened the beer and said opened yours now. I just turned and walked back and into the dining room.
He followed and presented a menu some of which was in English so I ordered an omlette with a side of potato.
This duly arrived but was accompanied by a salad.
I ate the omlette and potato. He then approached saying You no like salad. I just said no order No pay and left.
Breakfast was at 0830 so spot on time I arrived and was shown to the same seat as dinner the night before. Here was set one hot hard boiled egg,six bread rolls, six pats of butter, six portions of jam,six cold meat slices all different and a glass of sparkling mineral water. He came and served a coffee and explained what you dont eat you pack for lunch and had supplied a sheet of foil and a plastic carry bag. However I was instructed one piece of fruit for breakfast only other for lunch. Each guest was told the same as they arrived.
With live traffic showing a blockage on the autobahn between my entrance and exit points I reprogrammed the GPS to go via the village of Lichtenstein as research had shown a motorcycle restoration shop there.
It was duly located and i was invited to look and photograph the bikes. Then suddenly the owner indicated he wanted a drink, showed me the door and closed shop guess it was his breaktime?
Upon arrival at the track one person began parking the group I had arrived with when another redirected us to an outer shuttle park called P12 a six minute ride away.
So we arrived and after changing jumped on the bus only to sit for 20mins before leaving with the same amount of people.
We arrived at a gate and two officials directed us to bag security then the gate. Fine except when we got to the gate there was no where to buy tickets. We were told the people who sent us were infact the ticket sellers. So we all went back out past security who were not happy and fronted the tickets sellers. Yes they had tickets but cash only if you wanted cards it was a 800m walk to a different gate.
800m later we arrived and joined the que. It was taking the one lady at least two minutes per cusomer to get tickets. Finally three out I could tell an argument was in place. The man had an on line ticket with a smart square code but the ticket office had no reader. I thought Germans were welll organised and percise?
Eventually she told him to go
So he walked into security who wanted to see his ticket, Not valid go away I think they said. Anyway he started to keep walking and a Security Guard placed his hand on his shoulder. The fellow immediately grabbed the arm pinning it behind the Guard and at the same time bought his other elbow smack down across the Guards throat holding him against the turnstile.
He then let go and leap frogged over the turnstile. The Guard and his mates looked to give chase but everyone in the area just showed a clenched fist they soon went back to bag checking as also the fellow had long disappeared in the grounds,
From this I realised she was only processing on line sales so it was another 80m to yet another gate
Here only one window was opened for card sales. Alarmingly it had under it Masetro Debit only.
I walked up and asked for a 3 day pass Yes she had one. Yes please and presented my MasterCard.
She looked and said Mastercard not valid in Germany if I remember.
Well it was enough I remembered I had my Polish Cap on so whipped it off sat it on her counter and made a machine gun noise saying Poland remembers Nazi Dogs killed 3000 Poles every day Now remember.
She said no more issued the ticket and after a word or two to Security and the Gate keeper about German precision and organisation I was inside a full 90 minutes wasted from arrival to on track. No wonder
Dorna is talking of this being the last MotoGP at this venue.
Finally the Germans who were the major attendees showed their disrespect for riders by leaving in large numbers once MotoGP qualifing had finished. There was infact still 5 hours of program to go. This includes all the up and coming riders of the Red Bull Rookies Cup and the ADRA series. Really its the height of arrogance not to stay and show support for these new riders. The Rossi & Pedrosa fans seem to forget that Rossi hasn't won for some time and Pedrosa only yesterday announced his retirement. Added to this has been the recent deaths of Dan Kneen,Adam Lyon, William Dunlop and James Cowton all in the past 6 weeks while none are MotoGP riders, but still racers, the ranks can only be filled by encouraging and supporting young riders making their way in a sport filled with danger so to walk out is akin to those NBL players who show no respect to their countries flag.
Upon returning after a full program of racing it was obvious that my actions had not affected my hosts arrogance as he had left a note on my bed saying they do laundry for 10Euro. Apparently the housekeeper had noted I had done my own and left it to dry in the bathroom but in no place that would hinder her cleaning. Oh well tomorrow a new day a new challenge and yes I am up to it,
