As I bid farewell to Sachsenring Grand Prix track I could not help but think was this the tracks last farewell also,
Dorna the organising body of MotoGP has indicated a strong desire to move the German MotoGP away from this track as early as next year.
The offer various reasons why this historic but everchanging track has no more rights to hold this event, foremost are financial returns.
A quick look at customer reviews from 2016 up to 2018 all have much criticism that was again not addressed this year,
In order to be a financial sucess the track needs to have satisfied large crowds and this is not happening.
Ticket issues ranks as the No 1 concern as customer after customer relives problems of double handling, incorrect tickets, tickets shown as sold out suddendly the only tickets available the list goes on and on.
Second concern seems to be inadequate signage both leading to and within the track.
Parking also ranks high on the list of complains with most people just finding a local willing to park their motorcycle for a fee rather then using either the official pre paid Park 11 or the commuter shuttle park Park 12.
Health issues such as an almost total lack of shade both in the stands and the standing areas concerns those who have visited.
Smoking is permitted everywhere and non smokers are forced to inhale others smoke and the butts are always thrown on the ground.
The actual track surface has met with the approval of the riders who seem split over a move or not.
The track officials also have a very scant regard for Work Health & Safety. This is shown in a number of photo's where even the Red Cross workers driving around the track were hanging onto the side of the ambulance with open doors. I guess however they see all the scooter riders with no helmets so what the heck.
The track officials who I assume are volunteers are often seen just enjoying watching the races rather then carrying out the job they have been assigned.
Security people are also very slack, often just asking do you have any guns or knives as if a terrorist would own up. Their lack of effort was seen by each and every spectator as large amounts of smoke bombs were set off and loud bangs (fireworks?) could be heard. The smoke was all yellow so maybe ,as the TV big screen were so Rossi bias, maybe Security let yellow smoke bombs in?
What was well done included a wide range of reasonably priced foods that were located all around the track so access was easy with only short waits.
The actual events were run very close to time and showed what precision one would expect from German's.
While very small percentage wise the Australian's riding today showed a bright future with Remy Gardiner holding for half an hour the fastest qualifying time, yesterday, and in his race today finishing in 11th place in a closely contested event with a high retirement rate.
Jack Miller (see photo) rides in the Premier class and our hearts missed a beat when early in the event he was sidelined iin a four bike crash but he recovered and rejoined the race a lonely last spot. However he showed his determination and undoubted riding abilities to carve through the field to not only record a finish and 2 points but also finish in 14th position.
The race was won by Marq Marquez and in doing so joined past victors such as Bill Ivy & Ago as Marquez has now won at Sachsenring at all three classes in the World MotoGP Championship and today marked his 9th win from pole position in a row.
The slack efforts by the tracks pull down team summed up their couldn't care less attitude as they dragged sponsors banners across dirt and gravel rather then neatly rolling and carrying to the pick up locations. They were also throwing expensive scaffold equipment with scant regard for damage to threads etc. maybe they already know they wont have jobs next year?
The ride home like every day was largely a "surprise route"as despite travelling to and from the same location over the past three days Tom Tom seems to find a new route each time. However that is an added advantage as I see over 120kms of new scenery each day.
The only constants are the neat fields of ripe wheat heads and the buildings within each village that have changed very little since this former part of East Germany became a unified Germany.
The great three days at the 2018 German MotoGP finished with dinner at the local Service Station where they offered a German sausage in a fresh hot bread roll with a large Coffee made on milk, well two actually, followed by a three flavour ice cream with wafers and a take away soft drink, for around $6Aud. perhaps they too haven't raised prices since East German times.

Laura Well, the Motor GP is done and dusted for this year, and a cloud of uncertainty is hanging of the venue for next year..... one blessing for this year is there were no fatalities .....and as for dealing with the custom of attitude ..... you just can't change what is .....
