Ren and M's Excellent Adventure
Well it really seemed like a good idea in La Paz, which is a strange amazing city, but we wanted to head off in a 4x4 car to explore the South West area of Uyuni. We arrived at 3am into Uyuni and the first time we saw the car ..... maybe we thought it had seen better days but kept those thoughts to ourselves as we were really looking forward to the adventure! We drove off into the wilderness with Thomas from Belrin and Valeria from Italy and our driver (mechanic/tracker/saviour) and cook!
With them we had soo many adventures including a puncture......losing a wheel in transit....the wheel shaft coming away.....leaving the driver to fix these small matters in hail the size of tennis balls.
Land slides leaving great big craters in the road which were completely impassable.....at one point leaving the vehicle to dig our way through a landslide whilst in 7 thunderstorms (7 bolts of lightening in 20 secs!) and being able to see the spots where the lightening was hitting. (later when tucked up safely in the salt hotel we asked the driver whether he had been worried at any point ?........."oh yes!" he said...)
A couple of the nights we stayed in the MOST BASIC accommodation I have ever seen. It wasn't good! One village had a plane that had crashed into the side of a small mountain above which they had left. However we also stayed in a hostel made only from salt....including the beds! (it also had running water which was blissful!) All places only had electricity from 7pm until 9pm.........we all played cards alot!
However the views were trully amazing, including Salvador Dalis tree, the wilderness where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid was filmed, the flamingoes all at 4,000 metres above sea level, the lagoons of all different colours.....blue, green and red, the desserts, woodlands and strange villages as well as villagers!
But nothing prepared us for the sight of miles and miles and miles of bright white salt flats spread as far as the eye can see and over the horizon. Where the sky is perfectly reflected in the glass like water.
