Colleen & Tom's Explorations
Up early today - alarm set for 6 so we could make it to the dawn service for ANZAC Day. The company expected maybe 150 for the ceremony - there were at least 600 of us. We had reps from the 3 services, the scouts, and a Salvation Army member with his bugle just happened to be on the voyage. It was a lovely service on the pool deck. Father Peter did the commentating and suggested that with the background noise of the pools we could close our eyes and imagine being on the shores of Gallipoli. They also played the New Zealand national anthem and quite a few people amongst us sang it. We then went down to the promenade cafe for breakfast where we met a lovely lady from Katoomba and her two teenage daughters - she works as a casual at Ellison PS. after chatting to them for quite a while we went up to the schooner bar where did the Mensa quiz and got only 1 wrong! The American crew member we talked to was impressed with our ANZAC Day - he said their Veterans Day is more just a day off work/school We then wandered back down to La Scala for the 11.15am ANZAC service - the theatre was almost full - it was lovely. After the service, where we were welcomed by the captain, we continued on to lunch where we celebrated Tom's last day of employment. After lunch we went up to the bar of level 14 to watch as we passed by Bali and the volcanoes, and watched as the pool people all had a sausage sizzle and ANZAC biscuits out on deck. Very nicely done! We sat and read for a few hours before returning to our cabin for a nap, only to find a phone message from Bridget's mother! I returned her call - apparently she's been trying to get in touch with us because she's on our cruise too, so we're all going to have lunch together tomorrow. Then it was nap time, waking up to find it was time to go down to dinner. At dinner we drank more bubbly to toast Tom's retirement, then returned to our cabin. I've had a sore throat most of the day, so I'm taking it easy.
