Colleen & Tom's Explorations
This morning we had a wonderful breakfast in the restaurant and it was lovely to see our fellow travellers. We had to put our suitcases outside our room by 6:30am, have brekky from 6:30am and be ready to go by 7.15am. Aaaah - this coach tour business is all new to us, but we are enjoying the change. After brekky we set out on our trip, first touring through Brussels while Bob explained the background of the EEC and NATO. We then drove on through Belgium and entered Germany, heading for Cologne, a city that was totally wiped out during World War II, apart from the beautiful cathedral, which we visited. They were holding mass at the time and we were there in time to hear the Alleluia, which was the same tune as ours, but the verse said in German, of course. After exploring the local area on foot we returned to the coach and headed off for Boppard where we boarded a beautiful riverboat for a cruise down the beautiful Rhine River. The river is still used as a major transport route, and the long freight barges have families living on them with their cars parked at the back. We enjoyed a glass of Rhine Riesling as well as the stunning views. It's been a long time between Rieslings!! At the end of the cruise we drove on to Heidelberg - a university city. They have a massive church in the centre of the old town which used to be divided down the middle with glass, used by Catholics and Protestants at the same time!! The old buildings are made out of beautiful rose coloured sandstone. Tonight we had dinner together and got to know our little group even better. They are lovely people. There are lots of Aldi stores here in Germany - Mr Aldi is the richest man in the country.
