Colleen & Tom's Explorations
So up early again this morning - time to move on. Tom went downstairs to the little cafe in the hotel and bought some fruit muffins and a banana for brekkie. We packed up and went downstairs and the doorman called a taxi for us - the taxi wasn't arriving for ages so he whistled to a black van that was passing by and he tootled in and picked us up. The driver was from Peru and he talked to Tom non stop to the train station. The trains are huge - the double deckers soooo tall. The platform has a heightened part, similar to ours, and then the part that is at the level of the tracks. Our carriage was on the track level and the train, which was really long, was a mix of single level and double decker carriages. We were travelling coach class and the carriage was set out like business class in a plane. We settled in for our 3 hour trip. The lady in charge of our carriage told us all of the rules for our carriage, including the cleanliness of the bathroom facilities (do not spread faeces or bodily fluids on the walls or floors). We passed by a lot of industrial areas, and saw lots of yellow school buses lined up at level crossings doing their morning runs. We also saw farmland and orchards, and lots of water - ranging from bogs to lakes and canals for drainage. It was great to watch the countryside passing by. Tom went down to the cafe car and bought lunch for us. We did lots of reading and snoozing - although other people's phones kept going off. We arrived into Orlando at about 1.30pm and found there were shuttles at the railway station, so we organised one to take us to our hotel which is out of town a bit. First impressions of the Sheraton is that it's wonderful! Our room is much larger than the Hilton. The bottled water is free ($3.50 at the Hilton), the wifi is free ($9.95/day at the Hilton). The towels are still postage stamp sized, but they are soft and fluffy. Our view outside is of a theme park of some sort. Across the road is a Denny's. We've never eaten in one so we decided to have dinner there. It was just like a diner. The food was reasonably cheap and edible, just not full of flavour. Today was our first alcohol free day since we left home! I'm sure our livers are happy about that! I forgot to mention a florist shop I saw down in the keys - "The Enchanted Florist"! Very clever, I thought.
