Colleen & Tom's Explorations
Missing the girls so much, but public phones are few and far between. Our hotel charges the standard rate plus 95%!! Tomorrow we hope to have access to the internet at the airport.
Today we walked down to the wharf where the coaches leave from and got great coach seats for our 11 hour tour. Our coach driver was Herman the German, but actually Austrian, whose driving became more erratic as the day passed. We drove down the coast (running 3/4 hour late because of bike race closing the streets. We drove through Half Moon Bay "The pumpkin capital of the world", Capitola "The begonia capital of the world" and Castroville "The artichoke capital of the world", where Marilyn Monroe was discovered when crowned Artichoke Queen in 1946.
It was a pretty drive - coming back we drove through Gilroy "The Garlic Capital of the World". They even have a garlic restaurant in SF that serves garlic flavoured ice-cream. It was a nice trip down the coast, and the weather improved along the way (our first cold day).
Monterey was a nice little town. We had tickets to the aquarium, which we found interesting, but not as good as Sydney. They had some good concepts - like the jellyfish with a plain blue background that were called "Living Art" and they really were. They had 2 tanks where the glass was floor-to-ceiling and you could hardly see where it began.
We had a lovely lunch in an English type of pub.
We continued on our way via the 17-Mile Drive at Pebble Beach. this is a coastal drive through a forest with lots of golf courses. Along the way we stopped and Tom fed almonds to squirrels. We saw the homes of lots of famous people who either live or have a holiday home in this exclusive area: Angie Dickinson, Francis ford Coppola, Martha Stewart, John Wayne (now his family), Paul Newman, George Lucas, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Arnold Swarzeneger, Charles Schultz, Clint Eastwood (now his ex-wife's), Peter O'Toole and Doris Day.
On the way in to Carmel we saw the house where they filmed "The Ghost and Mrs Muir".
We had time in Carmel to wander around. Then we boarded the coach (at 6.15pm) and headed back, via Highway #1 and Silicon Valley.
When we returned to Fisherman's Wharf we picked up some takeaway pizza for dinner, had a drop of whisky and then bed - we were tuckered out.
