Belgrade is a great place to visit, no doubt about it. We splurged for a good hotel in a good location and it paid off. We are right on Republic Square. We didn't have bus tickets we had train tickets Tourist information told us we had to change trains to get from Novi Sad to Subotica. Done it before, lots of times, not too worried. All the train stations in Europe seem to be the same. You go down stairs and there is a dark dingy tunnel under the tracks with stairs leading to each platform. Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia but through city centre is very compact and easy to walk. There several pedestrian walking streets and the central core is bordered by city hall, the Catholic Church (huge and beautiful) and the bishop's palace (can't go in, he lives there). Nis was our first stop in Serbia. The research I did and the information I found on the Internet was a little bit exaggerated but we enjoyed exploring .We did have a nice hotel with great staff and the location was 5 or 7 minute walk down a bit of a run down street to the modern pedestrian street, similar to Plovdiv, just not as long but very nice and vibrant with lots of restaurants and shops.
