Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia but through city centre is very compact and easy to walk. There several pedestrian walking streets and the central core is bordered by city hall, the Catholic Church (huge and beautiful) and the bishop's palace (can't go in, he lives there).
There was an international food fare in front of city hall
. Kitty and I were able to share a tredlink. We discovered these in the Czech Republic a few years ago. Dough wrapped around a cylinder about 2 inches in diameter, 8 inches long and cooked on a rotisserie then rolled in cinnamon and sugar. You can buy them at the market in Calgary, they are called chimney cakes. Somehow it tasted better in Serbia.
On the other side of the Danube is the obligatory fortress. When we looked at the map, we figured taxi or bus to get there. Not so, Novi Sad is very walkable and it was an easy stroll accross the bridge. The fortress is amazing, one of the biggest we have seen. We toured around there for a couple of hours. We have pictures.
We met a couple from New York who were touring with a choir giving free performances. The hall where they were singing was a 7 minute walk from our hotel. Free. Close. Why not, we went. It was OK, they had talent but we didn't recognize any of the music but it killed an hour.
Because of our unstructured travel, we don't have any transportation pre booked but usually we know the next place after the current one so when we arrive at the bus station, before heading to the hotel, we buy tickets for our next destination.
Got into Novi Sad, bought 2 tickets for the bus to Subotica.
A day or 2 later we were looking at the tickets and couldn't find a time of departure. We went to the tourist information Centre and learned we had train tickets. Trains in Serbia are slower than buses but there is a fast train to Subotica and it looks like we might have to change trains. We've done it before and can do it again. Plus trains are a lot more comfortable than buses. I will leave you in suspense, details about our train experience later.
On our last night in Novi Sad we had a really good meal in a very noisy restaurant and walked to the river to see the fortress lit up at night. It was an evocative moment standing by such an iconic river (go watch a Rick Steves travel video, you will understand)
Forgot, we took public transit out to Fresca Gora, a national park with monasteries and wineries. Cute little town,Sremski Karlov. We visited 1 small Monastery and Kitty sampled 2 local wines. The lady in the winery was very friendly and quite chatty, that was fun.
Off to breakfast. Our hotel in Subotica us outstanding, the nicest so far. From that you can we must have managed the train,
More later, hunger rules
