Well the cover image wasn't Bogota but Medellin- there is a famous
Artist here called Botero who makes statues and paintings all of extremely fat people! There were several of these statues around in the central plaza of medellin which were all very funny!

So now we are in bogota, capital of Colombia and must say are finding it the least enchanting place we've stayed yet! I think I've just made an illicit pact with a brownie woman selling brownies in our hostel- I didn't have enough money so we made an exchange in Spanish relating to me selling my soul to her tomorrow probably for all I understood! Brownie tasted good though..
So bogota- it's very grey and dingy in the city, none of medellin's clean and new vibe, it's all a bit faded and tired. We went to the Museo del oro yesterday which is highly recommended as a must see and was stunning. Rather than just being an exhibition about gold the museum was using gold to demonstrate early progression and beliefs and rituals of indigenous tribes around south America, it was really fascinating and their collection of gold was unbelievable- also fortunately everything had an English translation so we actually understood something- hurrah!
Today we had a very traditional Colombian breakfast- a tamale or something like that- basically a huge vine leaf containing stodgy corn maize with chick peas, chicken and egg, muy interesant!
We then took the long and arduous journey to the Catedral del Sal, a cathedral crafted in a salt mine in a nearby town. It took 50 mins on city bus then another hour on a transfer bus to get there and then a 30 minute walk through this beautiful little town to get to the cathedral. It was a pretty interesting tour and quite beautiful but possibly not worth such a long journey!
We've changed hostels so we hopefully will now have hot water at our disposal and a ping pong table to boot! Going out to dinner at a Mexican joint called enchiladas (mmm enchilada...) then on to a crazy Colombian game called Tejo- basically involving throwing a dumbell at a target loaded with gunpowder- when metal hits metal there's an almighty bang! Game is free as long as the drinks keep flowing... Watch this space! Love to all at home.
