Our flight didn't leave until early afternoon so we took advantage of the morning and walked to Alice Springs city center. It was Sunday morning so there was lots of activity with small vendors on the street. All of the vendors who had tents and tables were selling what seemed to be the typical souvenirs. The Aboriginal people were on the grass and sidewalks with their paintings. We found a woman and her family who had her art work. We liked her art and decided to purchase a piece of "bush medicine". Her name was Margaret and when we told her we were from the US she said she knew 2 people from the US and thought awhile. Then when she finally came up with their names she thought we might know them. After we walked away I regretted not getting a photo with her and went back. When I asked if I could take her picture she said "it will cost you again" and then said "no it's OK". Randy got a picture and her Granddaughter got in the photo as well. She said she had 5 grandchildren. She said she would not smile for the picture, not sure if it was because her teeth were quite bad or other cultural reasons.
The incidence of diabetes among the aboriginal people is extremely high. Our guide yesterday said it was due to their lack of ability to absorb sugars and now have easy, inexpensive access. The largest kidney dialysis center is here in Alice Springs.
Today the temp will be 100 degrees again. Diesel is $7.00 a gallon.
Today we are flying to Adelaide in South Australia were the temps will be cooler.
