Birthplace of Napoleon, Ajaccio 25th May
In Ajaccio - a real workaday town as well as big ferry and leisure port. It has a Citadel (still in use by the French Navy and not open to public) and an old town of tall houses, criss-cross of narrow streets and daily market. We're in a marina (won't do too many of these come June when the prices skyrocket!) so taking advantage of things like wifi, laundries, etc.
We are here during the Imperial Regatta - quite by chance! This is a 6 day event for classic yachts to race, compete for councourse appeal and generally be admired. They are beautiful, long, lean and sleek with polished wood and gleaming bronze, chrome or stainless steel fittings. Even the wooden blocks are leather-covered. Britain is well represented with Shamrock (100 ft+) in new green livery, a couple of William Fifes, and others along with boats from Monaco, France, Malta and other countries. Live music at night (surprisingly good), ringside seat from our own boat. A really nice vibrant stop.
On now further up the west coast to some National Park area with apparently beautiful and different coast - once we've stocked up and R has watered the boat inside and out…. Til the next signal - hope all's well in everyone's different worlds.
