After a ridiculously short amount of sleep - 2hrs! We were up at 4am to catch our flight to New Zealand! For once all went without a hitch, we were all checked in and we even managed to all get seats together! The flight was basic, (easy jet stylee) but short, so in between screaming kids, we managed to get some sleep! Once we'd landed in Christchurch all our bags came through, so we thought we'd actually made a flight without any hitches and ditched our bad luck! Then Dan noticed his bag was wet and then we all started noticing a really strong smell of fish! On closer inspection it turned out some clever soul had brought a big box of prawns with him and they had defrosted all over Dans bag! A tired and hungry Dan wasn't all that impressed, but was told nothing could be done, refraining him from hunting down the culprit we made our way to our hostel.
Christchurch was a really strange city. It had a strong European feel about it and for some reason I had managed to convince myself we were actually in Canada! We managed to find some shops to stock up on some more appropriate clothing for the 15 degree temperatures! We spent one afternoon travelling up a mountain in a gondola, from which we saw some pretty amazing views, whilst hugging some much needed hot chocolate. We then made our way to lake Tekapo which sits at the bottom of the alps and at the base of mount cook! Here we stayed in a really sweet hostel which looked out over the lake and had a massive log fire, which did smoke us out a few times!
The next day we headed to Queenstown, which is a pretty cool town! We spent the afternoon talking through our plans for the whole of NZ, with a travel rep, at our hostel, who was amazing and pretty much planned our whole trip for us, to suit our budget. We went Jet boating today which was soooo much fun, if a little cold and wet. We ended up doing several 360s and dodging rocks by sheer millimetres! We've got so much planned for the next few days its soo exciting!!
