Richard & Michelle Hamilton's Travels
Today we were in holiday mode and made a very late start out the door. We did not hit the road until 11am. The walking, especially uphill in the last few days, taking its toll. First stop Castiglone del Lago, a castle on the shores of Lake Trasimeno. This was an amble around the small old part of the town and then a fairly short walk around the entire castle and town walls taking in the lake views. There were many locals and families out and about who for once outnumbered us tourists. It was quite windy and we could see a couple of small yachts enjoying the breeze on the lake. We were keen to come here as we could see the lake in the distance from great view spots in Montepulciano. On to Arezzo, another town recommended to us by our hosts. We arrived around 1.30pm and had a slight surprise the town was more conventional than all the other towns we had visited. It wasn't until we got a few blocks back from the car streets that we found the old city. We ended up in the Piazza (as always) where a local food festival was happening. After some hesitation we joined in and chose some lunch, and watched the local families and groups of friends filling the Piazza with chatter (and smoke from the wood burners). There were cheese, wine and cured meat tents, and various other food tents, all displaying local produce. It was all very leisurely, no one seemed in a hurry to move on or eat quickly, just what we needed today. After a walk around some of the older parts of the town, we headed back to Montepulciano to spend our last night exploring a little more and visiting the impressive church on the way in that we had missed stopping at on other days. We have been very fortunate with the weather in Tuscany. When the sun shines there is literally a great photo round every corner. It has been warm & fine with temperatures in the low 20's every day, perfect for enjoying all the walking & views as well as sitting down outside at eating places to enjoy a snack & drink (and of course a great way to ensure clean, close by facilities!) Tomorrow we are off to Bologna via Siena.
