The plane journey to Hong Kong we were so lucky, we got to spread out across 3 seats each, so far we always lucked out on the travel. Soon enough we were reunited with Ben; we spent a few hours listening to all his stories whilst searching for somewhere to eat and then me and Holly-Beth were desperate for an early night in our posh 4 star hotel.
An early start the following morning to attempt to get our Chinese visa, the luck had clearly run out as the office would be closed for Chinese New Year by the time we needed to pick it up...better luck in the next country I suppose! So off we popped to meet Alice who I went to uni with instead. Meeting her outside of Lancaster was so surreal; she took the three of us around the city and across to Star Avenue, we even dragged her to a market - which was so handy having someone negotiate for you in the same language!
Chinese New Year's Day Alice had to spend with her family so it was just the trio who headed out for NY celebrations. We found dragon dancing, and took Ben shopping for a new jumper like a little child, and then headed to find a good spot on the parade route. We waited for ages but it was certainly worth it, all the lights and dragons and totally bizarre sights. Of course the highlight for us was the Disney parade float! I got to see Minnie and Mickey! It was such a once in a lifetime opportunity for us to be there and celebrate amongst the masses.
Ben dragged us to the 10000 Buddhas the next day which was by far my favourite day in HK. It literally is just thousands and thousands of different size golden Buddhas lining the steep walk to the temple at the top. Exhausting but completely worth it, one of my favourite temples of my entire trip. That evening was the famous firework celebrations and it seemed as though we had a good spot on the balcony of the mall overlooking the pier but unfortunately due to the smog and the horrendous smoke from the show, it was a let down. However the night wasn't a fail, we had such a laugh and the drunker Ben got, the more we cackled. We headed for food and Ben ended up accidentally dipping his fries in milk, thinking it was a sauce, me and Holly-Beth were roaring with laughter!!! I just couldn't get my words out fast enough to tell him beforehand!
The day after, me and HB had a walk around the city and a mooch round a market before giving in to a huge slab of cheesecake. Later, we met back up with Alice at the big cat (which had become all of ours meeting point) and went to a really scrumptious Vietnamese restaurant. We dragged her to yet another market were and then said our sad goodbyes to Alice. I was so pleased that she met up with us, we had a blast and I don't even know when I will see her again. We then headed to find Ben who had met up with his friends there, no surprise that he was already half cut when we got to him. But he still took on the 10 shot challenge. Twice. He provided great entertainment for us that night as we weren't really drinking, especially when he ordered 5 burgers at McDonalds for no apparent reason haha. So glad he found his way home that night, God knows how!
So it was time to check out of our beautiful hotel, meet Ben for our last meal and all head to the airport. The HK airport is the faffiest airport in the world, has to be! You check in at terminal 1, go through immigration, then to security (where I forgot to take my water out and got pulled over oops!), then get a train (yes a train!) back to another terminal to find your plane. Why?!
Then we had a 13 hour stop over in the amazing Singapore airport. They have a cinema, a tv lounge, a fish pond and a butterfly garden! We slept for a good 6 hours there in front of the tv, laughing ourselves to sleep at total wipeout. Then in the morning we explored the airport, saw Mickey Mouse again there for some reason, and headed for our flight to Cambodia, finally.
