My journey home was very eventful! But altogether pretty awful.
I tried to sleep a little at the airport in La Paz because check in was at like 4am and we got there at about midnight. It had been a long day and I was pretty tired. I said goodbye to alexis and sophie and got in the queue for check-in. This was going to be my first flight, La Paz - Sao Paulo, where I would change onto another. However the woman on the counter said that my bags werent going to be transferred for me, id have to re-check them in at Sao Paulo. It was a bit annoying but i didnt think too much of it. I went through to the gate to wait for the flight which never seemed to come. It just kept getting delayed and delayed. I ended up chatting to this guy who was going home to london too but on different planes. It was really interesting to talk to him because he had done the parts of the continent that i missed out on and vice versa.
We finally got on the plane and I was very pleased that I managed to get two seats to myself. I camped up in my usual style and started sleeping as soon as we took off. However I'd barely got to sleep when we seemed to land... I was really confused and couldnt understand what was happening but it seemed that to get to Sao Paulo, I would need to get off and change. We were in Santa Cruz and I changed over to my second plane, hoping that my bags were on it too!
On landing in Sao Paulo I went to the conveyor and luckily my bag was there and looked for signs for departures or transfers and found the international transfers desk. After waiting in the queue for a very long time i was informed that i needed to go upstairs. The guy who told me this was chatting to a friend on the phone and gave me a hug when he thought I looked pretty annoyed (I was tired!). On going upstairs and navigating one of the biggest airports I have ever been in, I found my check in desk - closed. Left with my hiking bag to fix myself a new flight I rolled into action sleepily.
4 hours later I checked in again only to find that I wouldnt be allowed through to my gate without a certain stamp on my ticket. When border control came over I found out that I had apparently entered Brazil illegally and needed to pay $80 to get this stamp!
There was a very long time which i spent walking back and forth he airport to see this person and that... in the end i had to go and get cash out to pay for it or i would miss my flight! In my tired state Im sure I made it VERY clear that the last minute add on (that it was $82 instead of $80) was not on! I just shoved some american dollars in their hand and said they could take it or leave it. By this point Im sure they had had enough of a moody teenager and just took it.
The 10 hour flight to Madrid and 2 hour flight to London that followed ran quite smoothly, though its safe to say I was more than relieved to find my bed at the end of it - and more than annoyed to find that $82 is £60!!!
Never mind...!
