We woke up early to check into the hostel but for some reason we couldn't until around 11, apparently the staff were waiting for the paperwork to come through but were reluctant to use their own printer, a sign of things to come. We got checked into room 1 and the place was an absolute dive, it was a 13 man room but there was just 5 Italians occupying it, the floor was mucky, the unused beds had loads of crap on them, there's writing on the walls, signs saying put your things in lockers because there are theifs about and there's no security cameras and there's loads of old stuff on the bench for people to store things, stuff like plates with food on, empty tinnies, gone off milk etc etc etc.
I thought that was bad but the toilets were even worse, because the hostel use to be a boarding school, the showers were set out in the same way but there was loads of rising damp it looked absolutely rank, the toilets were horrible and there was sick on the floor in one of the cubicles which ended up staying there a couple days so god knows how long it was there before we arrived. Walking down the corridors it actually felt a bit like a prison. The kitchen was disgusting, all the pots and pans in a cloudy water filled sink, I looked in the cupboard below one of the sinks and there was dead cockroaches inside.
The tv room had no air con and there was a load of VHS tapes you could watch, that's how ghetto the place is.
There was an Internet section, unfortunately the computers didn't work, looked like they were from the 90s and somehow somebody was sick on one of the screens and towers for a comp.
Finally we checked in and it turns out since its work based hostel and you don't know how long your staying then you pay after a week your here, sort of rent wise. We had to wait until 5pm to get our linen which made us realise just how disorganised the place was.
The back yard was literally that, a room with a ping pong table, another with a crappy washing machine, then benches out in the yard with a little bit of grass, two hours here and already we didn't like the hostel and were getting bored fast.
Me and tony went off to check out the town. There isn't an awful lot to it, just a long line of shops on a main road, just like a sunny Chester le street, I've said that before but because of the location and how rubbish the area is I like to compare it to home. There was the usual, subway, McDonald's, restaurants and stuff like that, but the only good place to go to is the library because the wifi is free and nice and cool. Griffith is unbelievably hot, tony was getting hit by it worse than me at midday and I thought maybe because I was use to 30 odd degrees all day when I was at cairns it would keep me in good stead but I was wrong. The temperature doesn't peak until 4pm and it was getting up to 40 degrees. All the time I've spent in Griffith I don't dare sunbathe its just too hot and I'd burn straight away.
Returned to the hostel to sort out a bit of farm work and we signed up for onion picking the next day, had to buy some shears and plenty water because we got told it is the worst job to do but it gets your foot in the door (apparently) so I thought I should give it a go so we signed up to it.
