This morning was a great clear morning so up shower and breakfast and as noted from yesterday no sourdough pancakes…
We needed to feed Clancy and also shop for ourselves. The fuel was a reasonable price but food here is not cheap. We only found one supermarket, it was well stocked. So fully loaded we headed to Chicken.
The drive up the Taylor Hwy provided exceptional scenery, with the autumn colours shining through. We were continually amazed at the colours and depth of shades of trees preparing for the oncoming winter.
Needless to say our journey to Chicken involved many stops to photograph the scenery.
We arrived in Chicken and the town is really like the brochures present it, small, quaint and full of character. We stopped into the Chicken Gold Camp & Outpost for a coffee and a wander around. We looked at the dredge and the giant chicken and then thought that there was not a lot of reason to stay here till the morning and if the weather, roads and border security where fine we would be in Dawson City before night fall.
Leaving Chicken we headed off toward Eagle and the Boundary turnoff to the border. The road was in good condition - it is also 'moose season' so along the route we got to see people with guns looking to shoot something. A little bizarre from our perspective but whatever.
Another interesting point to note here is that there are a lot of active gold claims and there are warnings not to enter or approach unless invited. So we did not get out of the car along this section of the road or even stop much. We did see the remnants of an animal killed along the way and the ravens were enjoying the feed. Supposedly hunters are required to pack-out or bury anything they nab, these hunters had got there kill to the roadside, gutted it and left the guts and unwanted carcass on the road side
We got to the boundary turnoff and went onto the gravel road to head to the border crossing. The road was in good conditions the views were awesome, weather was windy, cold and a little overcast. Too soon we found ourselves at the border ready to leave Alaska, enter Canada and drive the 'Top of the World' Hwy.
At the border crossing, the border guard raised the usual questions around number of times in Canada and why, then without much ado it was off you go, no passport stamp this time. Now we got to the highpoint on the Yukon side of the highway and just took in all the really amazing views it was a 360° vista to behold it was truly like you were on top of the world.
We proceeded further into Canada and then in the middle of the road was a real live walking hissing porcupine. Now I can see why so many we had seen before were road kill, they really need to understand that cars really don't care if you hiss at them. So after stopping for the obligatory photos and missing the really big hiss with all the spines out we were on our way again.
Now this Hwy was paved some years ago and we were told to be aware that it was in a poor state of repair. Now I must say that these Americans really need to give Australian roads a go if they want to see what is a poor state of repair. We were able to maintain a good speed and other than some rough gravel sections and watching out for oncoming traffic this road was great.
We proceeded down the highway till we reached the Yukon River. Here we waited the ten minutes for the ferry crossing. Again there are stories of three hour waits so we must be lucky or people only share horror stories.
So it was that we arrived into Dawson City and the tourist information centre was open to give us all the information we needed. A quick confirmation of available campgrounds and we headed off to Dawson Cities, Bonanza Gold Motel & RV Park http://www.bonanzagold.ca/
We were told select a spot on the hill and set ourselves up for the night. So we set up near the amenities and cooked dinner and settled in for the night.
