12 June: Siem Riep
We woke up at 08h00, finished up and headed to the corner where our Tuk Tuk driver was waiting for us, 08h30 always on time. We drove to Red Lodge to pick up Shahar and Eline before departing for the Roluos Group of temples. These temples had predated the Angkor Wat temples and were the oldest of all the temples, built in 877. In total we visited 3 temples, namely, Bakong, Preah Ko and the other one I cant remember. Built in a pyramid style they would have been amazing to any archaeologist who had a thorough knowledge of their history, but in comparison with any of the other temples we had seen they were not so impressive and we really didn't have any history of the temples.
We ended our tour at 11h00 at the temples, before departing for home, stopping along the way at a day market. Very busy with locals, the 'floor' of the market was starting to sink (it was kind of muddy) so everywhere they had laid out a type of box carton so as not to sink down....We purchased fruits of every kind after which we bought bus tickets for all four to Phnom Penh. Tedt dropped us off at Red Lodge where we proceeded to make a fruit salad of note. We left it in the fridge to cool while watching a video, both of us would have rather gone for a afternoon snooze than watch the movie. To top it off it ended prematurely 10 minutes before the end due to scratches, at least the salad was divine and we had a nice common area to relax - at our guesthouse they were building!
We walked back from their guest house to ours, meeting up with our Dutch friends along the way. Niek and Mark had arrived the evening before from Laos and were planning to do Angkor the next day. We exchanged our different experiences of Laos and Cambodia before heading off again, along the way stopping at the restaurant we had on the first day for the Amok. It was not as enjoyable this time round! Back at our guest house we rested for a while, catching up on reading and writing, before heading back to the markets for dinner.
We headed for a particular street market on a recommendation of Shahar. The street was filled with stalls all running out, handing you their menus in an attempt to attract you to their stall. We walked in to the third one and settled down for a fried rice and vegetable dish. First the soup arrived, this we hadn't ordered, but instincts took over and we quickly devoured the delicious watery soup. Then came our fried rice, a larger portion than usual, but just as enjoyable. We opted for a fruit shake, one mixed fruit and the other with banana and pineapple before walking to the market nearby. Leanne spotted pants that she really liked in a traditional cut but there was a mark where the material was tearing loose so she left it with the hope we would find it in Phnom Penh the next day. Nothing further attracted our attention and we left to start packing for the bus which would pick us up at 07h40.
