We have just had the most relaxing week on our trip. First we had a few days at Dalyan. The adventures included a cruise down the river, climbing up to some 'Petra-like' ancient tombs carved into a cliff face, mud baths and hot mineral springs, seeing giant sea turtles lured in by poor fisherman with blue crabs on fishing line, a dark sandy beach with the refreshing waters of the mediterranean and lovely breakfasts on the terrace overlooking it all.
Then another bus journey through the rugged pine covered mountains to Fethiye where we stayed in a dodgy backpackers and replenished our book supply for our boat trip.
The 'Blue Cruise' from Fethiye to Olympus was a major highlight of our whole trip. Our wooden boat was old and decrepit but it had a bit of charm.
We shared the trip with 3 chicks from England, Canada and Sydney who were all traveling solo. A bunch of old Austrians who were totally wasted by 4:00 each day, and an American couple who fit the stereotype of the loud rude and obnoxious perfectly. The wife of the couple cracked it even before we left as the boat departed an hour late, she declared this to the captain before sticking out her bottom lip and storming off. Her husband liked to announce his happiness with the food by saying "this is f***ing retarded sh*t man" or if he wanted a drink "hell yeah I want a f***ing beer b****". He cracked me up.
We sailed to some beautiful beaches, sunken cities, little fishing villages, rocky islands covered with crumbling stone ruins and ancient pirate caves. The perfect aqua blue water greeted us in every little cove where we stopped to have a swim and an explore. It was great to unwind at the end of the day with a few 'Efes' (the local brew) a traditional dinner and to be rocked to sleep.
At Olympus we stayed in backpacker/hippy heaven - our room was up in a tree house. We lazed on the turkish cushions with the same boat crew listening to some tunes and drinking some more Efes. That night we went up to the 'Crimera', which was a bit of a hike up a mountain to a spot where fire spews from rocky crevices. The fire can't be put out and apparently the flames have been there before Roman times.
We finished the action packed week in what has to be one of the most amazing landscapes in the world - Cappadocia. We stayed in Goreme which is surrounded by stone 'fairy chimneys', hundreds of cave houses and rocky cliffs and mountains. Each morning people take in the spectical in hot air balloons, I counted 43 one morning. We visited the world heritage underground cities and ancient cave churches and monasteries.
The Turkey part of our trip is coming to an end. We have really loved our month here. The food has been the best, I reckon I've had a few kebabs everyday and esther has polished off half of Turkey's baklava. Tomorrow we head over the boarder to Syria. We are expecting a few visa issues so hopefully it all goes ok, I can't wait...
