Nasca is famous for being the home to one of the worlds greatest archaelogical mysteries - the Nasca Lines. We spent one night here so that we could take a flight over these strange lines. They are a series of patterns and pictures etched into the ground across a wide area of flat desert. Some of the lines measure up to 32 miles in length but are still perfectly straight. From a small plane you get a great view of all the different animals, birds and insects depicted in the lines. However, it is still not known who drew the lines, or why - we were treated to many a theory but no-one seems to know the truth behind them. Thankfully the day wasnt too windy and the small plane not too bumpy...but after 30 minutes I was definitely ready to get my feet back on the ground. The Nasca desert also used to be home to the ancient Paracas and Nasca cultures. So while in Nasca we also visited a pre-inca cemetary where there were many mummies, over 1500 years old, in open tombs. The babies were quite distrubing, but even more strange was the mummy that still had toe nails?!Other than that Nasca was fairly uneventful. We had a bbq by the pool of our hotel in the afternoon and then just passed the time waiting for our overnight bus to Arequipa...
