Woke up this morning in the deserted town of Lusk in the middle of deserted Wyoming. We had breakfast at the hotel, which was really good. We left Lusk and drove to the Devil's Tower National Park via the town of Sundance, which I had originally planned on staying in. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but I imagined this town to be bigger, but Lusk was an experience….a very isolated experience.
We could see the Devil's Tower from 10 miles away, just sticking up by itself in the middle of nowhere, looking totally alien. We drove up to the park gates, and the lady informed us we had arrived on a free day and wouldn't have to pay the entrance fee. We drove in soon realising we were the only ones there, we drove passed a snowy flat space, with a sign saying "Do not feed Prairie Dogs." We looked over the snowy field and saw that is was covered in the small very cute rodents, who chirped at us if we got too close and waged their tiny tails. Darren was insistent on getting closer to them but sunk in the snow and couldn't stop giggling.
We tried to drive up to a View Point to see the tower but the road was thinly covered in ice and snow and the car got a little bogged. After having an initial panic attack Darren managed to dislodge it and back in down the road and back onto the clear road below. We went into the visitors centre and read the Native America Indian version of how the tower was created and also the science behind it, although scientists don't seem to agree on how it was formed.
We attempted to go for a walk around the tower which was 1.8 miles, however it took us half an hour of giggling and slipping all over the place just to get to the base of it. On the way up I found big cat prints, which I can only assume must have belonged to a mountain lion. The tower was huge when viewed from the base and is made up of hundreds of hexagonal tubes. It was truly one of the strangest things I have ever seen and it was made all the more eerie by the fact that we were the only ones there.
We took lots of pictures, including one of me pointing at the sky, like we were about to have a close encounter.
We left the Devil's Tower and got back on the road and headed into South Dakota.
