Day 10 - No shower.Day 11 - Had best shower of my life.
We spent until 12pm today in the style of the last two days, being hot and tired and hanging around in cafes. At 12pm we packed up the truck and drove it down to the ferry landing, we waited around for two hours before being allowed onto the ferry. The truck is going separately on a barge, so Dave went off to organise that and we all boarded the ferry.i remember walking towards it, thinking, this will take me to Egypt, I'm so happy right now, I don't care how rough it looks and then hearing Kath say, "Oh my god, we're all going to die".To which I replied, "Perhaps you would like to go back to the hotel?'
We got on the ferry and were shown to our cabins, when I opened my cabin door, I felt a rush of lovely cool air.It was air-conditioned!Shock horror. There were two plain bunk beds in there and a power point and an evil drawing of a bunny pirate on the wall, but compared to what I had just come from it was luxury! There were not enough cabins for all of us, three people had to miss out and sleep on deck.Guy, who takes every opportunity to sleep outside volunteered immediately and our tour leaders, Dave and Sarah said they would sleep on deck too.I told them to come and roll out there mats on Siobhan and I's floor. So we had four of us in the small cabin, which was quite fun.
We ended up having a Red Dwarf marathon, which I don't think Sarah enjoyed very much, but it entertained Siobhan, Dave and I for a while. We also had another game of killer bunnies, which is always a bit random and fun.The ferry passed Abu Simbel at night and I got to see it all lit up and from the water as it is supposed to be seen.It was one of the best moments of my life.
I managed to sleep longer than anyone else and awoke to find Dave had wrapped Teddy in toilet paper like a Mummy, which I thought was funny. He told me I had been cuddling up to him in my sleep while he was wrapped in toilet paper, slightly embarrassing, but still funny.
The ferry took 18 hours and we arrived in Aswan at around 11:30am, we got out of customs at 4pm, damn Arab madness. We arrived at Philae hotel, the great unwashed. We were shown to our rooms and I nearly had a heart attack. It was the nicest hotel of the trip…..from prison to paradise. It had air conditioning, beautiful clean beds, a bright blue feature wall, lovely lamps, a flat screen TV, fridge, flushing upright toilet and the best shower I have ever had!We also had an amazing view of the Nile, with feluccas going past and Nile cruisers docked by the shore.I just ran around hysterically, screaming, "Oh my god! Oh my god!"I could hear Dave making fun of me in the hallway screaming the same thing in a girlie voice.I went out and got him and showed him our view and pointed out the tombs of the nobles.
After I used what seemed like the best shower in the world, I went down to the Corniche and had the best McDonalds in the world.Nearly all of us did, having not seen a McDonalds since Cape Town.Dave attempted to block my way in, and I struggled to get past him, thinking, no force on Earth is going to stop me getting a Big Mac Chicken right now!
We walked back from McDonalds and some of us decided to get a felucca out for the sunset. We sailed around on the Nile enjoying the cool breeze, and I was happy to be in Egypt, where magic happens.
