The Southern Scenic Highway was not that Scenic! If it had been called the Southern Sheep Highway I would have understood a little better! After the thrills of Queenstown we drove over the mountains to Te Anau on the edge of the Fiordland National Park. From here it is easy to explore Milford & Doubtful Sounds, both of which are stunning. The road from Te Anau is only 120km but it took us almost five hours with numerous stops to look at waterfalls, chasms and lakes not to mention the number of photo stops and one very long tunnel! We arrived in Queenstown a few days ago and love it. There is so much to do and see. It's a great place for adrenalin junkies which we are not (yet). During the remainder of our time in the Glacier region we walked up to Fox Glacier and then around nearby Lake Matheson, unfortunately it was too overcast to see the reflection of Mt. Cook in the water but it was a nice walk anyway. The Glacier region is a little remote and it took several hours to travel over the Southern Alps and down to Wanaka.
