Malaysia done (for the time being at least) so time to get to the islands and fly to Phuket. We were staying in Patong so we had to get a minivan for the 45 minute trip from the airport. It didn't take long to realise that the standard of driving is, let's just say, a little more chaotic than in Malaysia. Overtaking on blind bends is the order of the day around here!
Patong is a really busy little town with literally thousands of scooters! We stayed in a guesthouse owned by a really nice Norwegian man who recommended a good travel agent, Phuket Travel Company, who we booked trips and transfers with. We soon found out that the price on the brochures for excursions is well above the price you can get from a travel agent in the know!
The first trip we went on was the 'James Bond Island' tour. This was on a large boat with a fun crew. We stopped at a white sandy beach, Muslim floating village, James Bond island and went canoeing in around the lagoon. On the way to the 007 island the guide called about 20 eagles who followed the boat for miles. The day was topped off for Philip when one of the crew dressed in drag settled in on his lap for a cuddle! A great photo opportunity!!
The next day we relaxed strolling around the shopping centre and paying a visit to the local Irish bar for a well weaned Magners! That evening we went to see Siam Niramit show. This included dinner from the huge buffet! Before the showing the cast performed the Elephant war procession. During the main show we saw traditional Thai dance and costumes. The set was amazing including a river flowing in front of the stage! Towards the end the elephants paraded through the audience. It was a really good night.
Our last day trip was to Phi Phi. This was on a speedboat, a very bumpy speedboat! This resulted in the majority of the Chinese on board being sick! It was our first opportunity to snorkel in clear water. We saw lots of fish and coral that day. We also stopped at Phi Phi for lunch. It was a bit overrun with boats which took away from the charm of the island.
Of course we had to pay a visit to the famous Bangla! It's a street full of wide eyed young lads! Lady boys offering ping pong shows at every turn!
Overall, we really enjoyed our time in Phuket. It was a great introduction to Thailand! Next stop another island - Ko Lanta..........
