13-16 January
We took another bus to get us to Georgetown in Penang. We were left off at the local bus station and experienced the first real blast of heat of our travels. It was a lot hotter than the foggy Cameron Highlands.
We ventured out into the heat to find something to eat and came across a nice looking hotel where we were sure we would find something to eat. With a limited menu we both picked the most normal looking dish. It turned out to be slimy thick noodles floating in raw egg! We decided we wouldn't be choosing a Hainanese dish again!
As a Unesco Heritage site we thought there would be lots of interesting things to see. We were more than slightly disappointed. We had met a couple from Georgetown while we were in Cameron who told us about how great the food was and how nice the beaches were. After our visit we didn't agree - maybe we just didn't go to the right areas.
The food in the hawker stalls were covered in flies and not appealing at all. Pizza Hut was used to fill the hole!
It was here that Philip's beloved iPhone locked itself! Thankfully we found a very helpful man who was willing to fixed the problem for a fee!
We thought we would escape Georgetown by going to Batu Ferringhi, one of the beaches on the island. We took the local bus which seems can never be full enough! The hotel we stayed in was the best part of this visit. The beaches were dirty and the town a let down. Thankfully Thailand was still to come! So long Penang, never to return!
