Today we packed an overnight bag and headed out down to the river to catch a raft house for the day and evening. The raft house is basically 2 big flat open plan rafts, one for sleeping on and the other is for eating in and the disco in the evening all being towed by a tiny noisy little boat. Once on board we headed down stream to our first stop, the Wat Baan Thum temple.
The Cave Temple of the Golden Dragon is set in limestone foothills, and is located about 5km south of the town of Kanchanaburi. Stairs to Wat baan cave lead into the mouth of a big dragon. There is a stone shaped like a woman inside the cave, and villagers believe that she is Ms. Bua Khlee, one of Khun Phaen's wives in a historical Kanchanaburi tale.
The walkway up to the Wat Baan Thum Temple of the Golden Dragon is unforgettable. The cave itself takes you up through the dragon's belly. Before this, you climb a steep set of beautifully painted stairs, surrounded on either sides by artefacts.
Back on the raft house we headed downstream some more and stopped at a small village where we had a walk around the food market and Christina ordered a Coke and got it in a plastic bag with some ice and a straw, while I sampled some of the local delicacies such as fried chicken’s feet and pork skin. As you can see from the picture, the chicken’s feet were a bit tough going and not as much meat on them as chicken wings.
After the market and now all fully fed, we headed over to the temple and climbed the stairs leading up (there were loads). We had a walk around at the top of the hill where the temple was and had a look inside and outside of the temple, took a few photos for you to see. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the temple’s name or even the name of the village, but I am feeling a little déjà vu here! Thailand, like China has many temples!
Back on the raft house, we headed further downstream and parked up (not sure that is the correct term for it). We had dinner and then the karaoke started, and when there are only 8 of you on there, you can imagine what the party atmosphere was like. LOL
The karaoke soon turned into a disco as we only had the same two people willing to sing, and the disco was pretty poor too as no one could really be bothered to have a dance. Oh well, lights and music out a 10pm, party animals, and off to bed!
