A little bit more off-roading required in order to get off the beach road and back on to the highway this morning but nothing that my Toyota Hiace couldn't handle. LOL.
I am heading south towards Mission Beach today but along the way I will be stopping off at a couple of places to have a look around. My first port of call was Josephine falls, still in the Wooroonooran National Park, is a series of stepped clear-water pools and waterfalls. The falls are fed by rain that collects from around Queensland’s highest mountain, Mount Bartle Frere (1622m). The pools were surrounded by tropical rainforest and giant tree roots.
The Lonely Planet also recommended a lovely swimming hole called Golden Hole but when I got there I saw a big yellow sign saying.....
"WARNING Crocodiles inhabit this area; attacks may cause injury or death!
I didn’t really fancy being eaten by a crocodile, so I just took a few photos before retreating away from the river banks and back to my van for some lunch.
I carried on south along the Bruce Highway (A1) for a stop off at Innisfail but there was very little going on here and not really much to see, so i just stopped at a bakery for a couple of rolls and a cake before heading on to Mission Beach.
When I got to Mission Beach i couldn’t find anywhere to park up and camp so I headed straight for the tourist information centre to chat to them to see where the cheapest places where to park up (I was getting good at this now and just not driving around trying to find somewhere to park). The tourist information centre gave me a map and said that the campsites close by where quite expensive and most of them were full. As Mission Beach area was split up into 3 main beaches, they sent me down to Wongaling Beach to the Skydive centre where they had van parking but it was still $25 per night but this was the cheapest around. I got booked in and managed to get the last space overlooking the beach with electric hook up.
Once I got settled in at the campsite I went for a walk along Wongaling Beach and through the town to get my bearing and to see what there was to do around here. To give you an idea.....NOT MUCH! I think most of the bars and restaurants were based at Mission Beach and not down here, but I had enough food for tonight and I think I will head over to Dunk Island tomorrow as there was a water taxi from the beach just near to the campsite and it will give me something to do tomorrow and give me a day off driving.
At around 8pm a Juicy car pulled up on the space next to me and it was an English couple who had been working in Sydney and now heading up the East Coast before going home. They were John and Louise from Devon and once we got talking they had spent the last 7 months in Sydney sharing a house with a girl who was working for my cousin Adam. Small world isn’t it?
