I arrived in Siem Reap this morning surprising on time, normally these night busses turn up around 2 to 3 hours late. Fortunately for me, we were dumped at a bus station where we were met by the usual group of people touting for our business including many tuk-tuk drivers. I grabbed one and told him that I needed a hostel and I had found one in the Lonely Planet. We agreed a price and he took me over to the hostel, which was very disappointing. The reception staff were not very welcoming and when I went to have a look at a room it was not very clean, so I decided that if they couldn't be bother to make any effort then they didn’t deserve my business so I left and asked the drive to take me somewhere else.
The driver took me to one hotel which was too expensive so I asked him to drive me to another hotel that might be a little cheaper. The next hotel was much better, it had a pool and breakfast was included all for $10 per night. I took it and checked in. The first thing that I did was to have a shower and then take a nap as I didn’t sleep too much on the night bus.
After waking up around 13:00, I headed out into town for a walk around and to grab some lunch. As the hostel was a little outside of the main town they had a free tuk-tuk drop off in the town centre. I grabbed a map from reception and took them up on their free tuk-tuk knowing that I could walk back to the hotel.
Arriving back from walking from the town centre, the swimming pool was very inviting so I went off to my room and got changed and went for a dip. In the pool, I got talking to two Australian guys, Richie and Luke. Luke had brought a girl with him that he had met in Phnom Penh and they had also brought their tuk-tuk driver with them who had family to go and see in Siem Reap. I had a good chat with Richie and Luke and we arranged to go out later for dinner, so we all got out the pool, went back to our rooms, got ready and met up at 7pm in reception.
We all went out for dinner, Richie, Luke and his girlfriend, the tuk-tuk driver and I grabbed the hotels free tuk-tuk (2 to be exact) and wandered around for a while until we stumbled upon a restaurant that we could all decide on. Then after dinner we split up, Richie and I went off to a bar while the others went back to the hotel as they were tired, although Luke wanted to come out with us his girlfriend wanted to go home, so he said he would join us later, hmmm..... never going to happen.
While sitting in the original Siem Reap bar, Angkor What? Maude from Vietnam (who was travelling with Boris) walked in to the bar and spotted me sitting over with Richie. She joined us and we what started as a quick drink with Richie ended up being quite a big night out drinking, playing pool, late night eating and meeting many random people ending up at 4am with Richie holding a baby!!! Very random but a great night!!!
