Our night bus from Caracas took us as far as Puerto Ordaz. There, we meet our contact, Migel, who arranged our 3 day trip to Angel Falls. We jumped on a small propeller plane for the 1hr flight to Canaima (the gateway to Angel Falls).
Canaima has no road access, the only way to reach this village is by flying. Its located in dense forest on the shore of a beautiful lake with lots of waterfalls. We spent the rest of the day exploring these waterfalls, one of them has a passage behind it allowing you to walk to the other side with the thundering water just inches away. One slip = death!
The next day we headed up river in search of Angel Falls. With a drop of almost 1km, Angel Falls is the highest waterfall in the world - 16 times higher than Niagara Falls! Located in a very isolated area of the Venezuelan jungle, it took us 4 hours in a canoe followed by a 1hr hike to reach the base of the falls. Totally amazing! We had a swim in the plunge pool before heading back to our basic accommodation for the night, hammocks! The following day we woke up to a fantastic view of the falls with morning mist rising up the table top mountain. Then we began our 24hr journey back to Caracas, via boat, plane and bus.
