After our adrenaline bike ride down "The World's Most Dangerous Road", we felt the need to chill-out for a day or two. The town of Coroico was the perfect place - it's biggest attraction is it's slow pace. Perched on the shoulder of a mountain, the town has amazing views across a forested canyon and our hostel really made the most of the location ... the view from our balcony was fantastic. We quickly settled in with a bottle of local Bolivian red wine - it's actually pretty good stuff!
A few hours walk away are some natural swimming pools, so one afternoon we decided to head over there for a cooling off. The walk wasn't too difficult, all downhill into the valley, passing through a couple of remote villages. By now we were beginning to take Bolivia's fantastic scenery for granted. The natural swimming pools were great. There was a series of small waterfalls with little fish leaping up the white water. The cool pools came as a welcome relief from the afternoon sun. But as we began to walk back up the hillside and back to town, the weather turned. A strong thunder storm quickly blew in. We were trapped, it was a 3 hour walk back to town! We started walking, expecting the inevitable drenching, but as luck would have it the storm passed by us. We watched as it passed by just 1km from us on the other side of the valley. The forked lightening striking the hillside was pretty impressive. We walked the 3 hours back to the village counting our blessings that we were not soaked to the bone.
