Pedro's Mission
So, Vilnius.
It took me 10 long hours to get to Vilnius from Warsaw on a night coach and I didn't manage to get any sleep. Mainly because I had a big German sitting next to me who insisted on snoring most of the way and because the coach stopped every 2 hours for 20 minutes!!
I got to Vilnius Backpackers hostel about 10 which was pretty similar to Mama's Hostel in Krakow in that it was small, homely, close to everything and everyone got to know each other. once I'd sorted myself out (took a while) I wondered about to see what there was and to get some grub. When i got back I met three Aussies and an English bloke from Bromley, got drunk and headed out to a club down the road from the hostel.
On friday, in the afternoon (the morning was a write off) i wondered around the Old Town a bit more and saw the Town Hall, lots of churches, Vilnius University and the Cathedral in Cathedral Square. After having a kip back at the hostel me and the three Aussie blokes went on an open top bus tour and saw everything else the city had to offer. The most famous attraction in Vilnius is probably St Anne's Church, which is the church that Napoleon wanted to take back to Paris in the palm of his hand. He must have been easily pleased as I wasn't that impressed with it. I've seen better. In the evening, despite being knackered, i went out with the Aussie guys to this place where women dance on the bar and get there kit off. I remember my dad telling me about these places.
Saturday afternoon, once i had got up, I walked up the hill to the castle and went to the top of the tower to get a view of the whole city and to watch a thunderstorm in the distance. After dinner i had a few beers and had an early night as i had to get up at seven to go the the Hill of Crosses
Sunday, The Hill of Crosses. It took me and 3 Aussie guys 3 and a half hours by coach, 20mins on a sweaty bus and a 2km walk to get the Hill of Crosses by Siauliai. Apparently the story behind the Hill of Crosses is as follow (short version)......
A father had a daughter who was seriously ill and most probably going to die and one day the father saw and Angel and she told him that if he put a cross on this hill then his daughter would be heeled. The father then raced to the hill and put a cross on top of it. Upon his return he found that his daughter was completely better and since then people form all over the world have been putting crosses on this hill. There are hundreds and thousands of crosses of all sizes there now and you'll see them once I upload the pictures.
I was listening to a bloke from Hong Kong who had been to the hill of crosses the day before and he liked it but he said 'now days I think, too many crosses'!!! i thought that was whole point of the hill but what do I know.
Anyway upon our return to the hostel we proceeded to drunk again and head out to another club with the rest of the hostel.
There are a few other day trips i would have like to made whilst in Vilnius but I didn't get time. One was to Trakai where there are two big lakes and two medieval castles and the other is to Paneriai, the the Nazi's and there Lithuanian buddies murdered one hundred people during WWII.
So to sum things up, I really enjoyed Vilnius, I met some good people and I would like to go back some time to see the places I didn't get a chance to see. It seemed like it was starting to become popular with the English blokes on their Stag do's so if you want to go there whilst there are not too many English idiots about I would go pretty soon and during the week
Next up, Riga
(photos of Vilnius will be uploaded shortly)
