It rained heavily all night and our journey next day was 80k of mud road, passing through the villages where many of the inhabitants had no shoes and were ankle deep in mud. Again most of the children were dressed in rags and whilst a lot more reserved than their Ugandan counterparts they were a lot quicker to shout Muzungu, Muzungu (white person) whilst outstretching their hands for money!! As today was Sunday many people were dressed in thier 'Sunday best' to visit church and the streets lanes were packed with people thronging to their chosen place of worship. If it wasn't so sad it was quite funny really seeing whole families , including husbands, kitted out in outfits fashioned out of the same material,'Von Trap' style. The mothers had obviously got a bargain peice of material and done a good job on the sewing machine.
The road got worse and in quite a few places because of thick mud became virtually impassable. We had not choice but to try and pass through the mud and deep holes filled with water. It was quite daunting as we approached trying to pick the best line through the mud so that it didn't clog our tyres too much. On occasions the water was up to the bottom of our doors.
After 5 hours we arrived at Kibuye which was our original destination the day before. The location was again stunning and our hotel was right on the water's edge. Whilst we had coffee on the verandah we were really pleased when at last, for the first time since we arrived in Rwanda, the sky was clear and the sun was shinning. We walked through the village which had yet another memorial site where 11,400 people were massacred, this time in a church where they had fled to safety only to be betrayed to the death squad by the priest. Again the hotel was basic but at least it was clean. Again dinner, wine and beer and Man Utd v Spurs and Man City v Sheffield. Peter is in his element.
