On Saturday, we all went to the beach; about an hour away from Henry's house. It was a nice beach, but there were quite alot of tourists there, which meant that every 5 minutes a man would walk past and try to sell you bracelets, paintings, or anything he happened to be carrying. It gets pretty annoying when you have to explain to the same man that you don't want to buy anything 5 times as he walks up and down the beach. There was also a band of african drummers who played at regular intervals, which was quite interesting to watch because people would go and dance in front of them.
In the evening, Abraham, (Henry's brother in law), taught us how to dance. It was a great experience and by the end of it we all needed showers, because it was about 27 degrees. After this, Abraham put on a video of a group of African dancers who were absolutely amazing. One of the tricks they do while dancing is one of them picks up a table with his mouth, and another guy hops over his shoulders, onto the table, and starts juggling. I know it sounds unreal, but i actually have a picture on my camera of them doing it at the beach.
On Sunday we all woke up pretty early, to leave the house for 8am to head out to our placements. About 30minutes into our journey we hit traffic, and we didn't work our way out for at least an hour and a half. After that, it was pretty much a straight forward journey to the Cape Coast; where the reverend was supposed to pick us up. I say supposed to, because we arrived at the meeting point, and the reverend hadn't even left his house yet. We ended up waiting for two hours at the side of the road for the reverend in upwards of 30 degree heat. When he finally arrived, Kirby, Jake and I all packed our cases into the back of the tro tro, and finally set off for Akim Achiase. The tro tro we were in, however, was a public tro tro, and when we got to the nearest town we waited for a further hour while we waited for it to fill up. In all, the journey that should have taken us 3 hours max, took us 6 and a half hours.
Mr. Acquah Heyford is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, and as we arrived, he got his children to get us a table, cloth and two chairs. He got two cold cokes out of the fridge and gave us some pie that he had made for us. The hospitality that he shows to me and Kirby is amazing; as we were drinking and eating, he welcomed us into his family and told us that for the next 5 months we were his children. He also said that his children are at our disposal, and if we ever want anything from town, we can ask anyone to go and get it for us.
The house we stay in is actually inside the school premesis, and although it is quite basic, it has such incredible views because it is at the top of a hill. Our bedroom is quite small, big enough only for two beds and our suitcases at the foot of the bed. There is a door at the back of the room which leads down into our own bathroom. We have a small cubicle and bucket for our shower, and a little pit toilet to the side of it.
Monday was the first day of school, and Mr Acquah Heyford called an assembely to welcome us. After a short speech, he turned to me and Kirby for us to introduce ourselves to the school. I wasn't really expecting this but Kirby went first and gave a short speech about himself and where he's from. When he finished, Mr Acquah Heyford said to all the pupils, "Now, you're all going to have to listen carefully to Mr. Peter, because he has a different accent, and talks very fast". It all went fine though and i got through my introduction quite well, even though Mr. Acquah Heyford had to repeat parts of what i said.
For the next couple of days me and Kirby watched some lessons being taught, and decided what we were going to teach. I said i'd like to teach english and maths at primary level, but this would have meant i would be teaching every period, so i settled to just teach english to primary 2, 3 and 5.
Yesterday, just before football practice, Mr.Acquah Heyford called another assembely and announced me as the head coach for the football team, and Kirby as the head coach of the Baseball team. I didn't have to lead the practice yesterday, but i will today, so i'll have to write about how that goes next time.
That's all i have time for now, and it's just started raining so i'll need to go back home.
