Ok, so we left Hohoe at 3am on the only available bus, and decided to go back to Accra before heading north up to Kumasi, and then north again to Tamale. We decided that this would be better than taking a sketchy trotro north from Hohoe, up the east side of the Volta. We were told that the roads are horrendous and the tros regularly break down, making a 5 hour trip a 10 hour trip. So after a few days of solid travelling, and waking up early to catch buses, we finally made it up to Mole national park.
I don't have long on the internet, but i'll briefly describe our trip. We arrived at the park in the afternoon, and decided that the lure of a pool was too much, so we spent a few too many hours there, missing our first safari walk. It wasn't that bad though because there wasn't much activity in the park anyway. We woke up the next morning and took a walking morning tour. It was still quite cool at 7am, and as we walked down the hill to the watering hole, we saw 3 massive elephants drinking. Right next to them, there were a pair of crocodiles sunning themselves. We were all in awe, and it was amazing to watch them from about 20 metres away. Our guide told us that if they were females, then we wouldnt have been able to get so close because they're much more agressive.. which sounds about right. We watched them for about 20 minutes, then we continued with our 2 hour tour. We saw a big group of baboons sitting and playing around just after the elephants, then for the rest of the tour we saw very little.
It was very relieving to see the elephants because on numerous occasions we have been told we may see nothing, because its not quite the right season to see them. Also, i don't think i'd be able to come back home and tell gramps that in the 5 months ive been here i didn't see one elephant.. let alone ride one to school every day.
In the afternoon, Kirby, Jas and I took a driving tour with another group. This was pretty incredible aswell, because we saw large numbers of antelope, and warthog. I've also got a great picture of a kingfisher perched on a branch.
In the evening we were eating our dinner outside (big mistake) and a baboon came shooting out of nowhere, leapt onto our table and starting helping himself to whatever was in reach. Although he stole a fair amount of food, it was actually pretty cool to watch him shovelling chips into his mouth while looking out for the rangers who have small catapults that they shoot rocks with. As quick as he came, he left and he ran back to all his mates.
So that was mole in a nutshell, and once again, i have some great pictures of everything.
Aunty Judith, we have only taken the small dugout canoe to get to the stilt village (which was incredible) so far. We were going to take a boat up the volta, but decided against it in favour of seeing wli falls.
