"Crikey, Blimey, Strewth, She's a beutty, Crocs rule, that's a close one, s*** a stingray"
All popular catch phrases of the late great Steve Irwin, Crocodile Hunter (aka Australia's Diana). Now Steve (god rest his soul) as well as making crazy animal documentaries also had a zoo near Brisbane, so as we were passing, we thought it would make a great day out. I mean what says fun better than a combination of dead celebrity and animals - whoo hoo.
So Australia zoo is pretty cool. We saw crocodile shows, stroked koalas and fed kangaroos. It has also expanded a bit beyond its 'Australia' brief and we saw a quality tiger show and fed elephants. A great day out.
The only slightly weird thing is that it would appear that Steve's wife (Terri) has decided to fill the income gap by sending their 11 year old daughter (Bindi) out to work. Yes in Australia zoo you can buy a whole range of Bindi products and as we walked through the zoo every tannoy was playing Bindi's latest musical hits, and there were even TV's playing Bindi's exercise video (yes that's right a 11 year old has an exercise video out), we even ate a 'Bindi Burger' (perhaps that's why they need the exercise vids). Really those child labour people should back off Primark and get down to Australia zoo! This combined with the presence of Steve in poster, statues, memorials etc makes for a bit of a creepy atmosphere ... but then you'd be distracted by a crocodile jumping up to grab a chicken from a bloke's hand and you'd think yeah it's not so bad.
After our day at the zoo we decided to go really strong on the Australian theme and sign up for a surf lesson - narly. We'd like to say we were naturals but alas no. Although we looked pretty cool in all the gear, this quickly faded once we were in the water. We were able to stand a few times but I'm not sure either of us was ever in control. In fact the only real surf move we managed to perfect was the wipe out! Oh that and we picked up a little bit of surfer speak ...
...later dudes
