Tuesday January 8th; early transfer by bus [4hrs] to small town of El Chalten. We stopped on the way at Leone famed for a stay by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. We arrived in time to gat in a 3 hr walk to the viewpoint of Fitzroy Mountain. This was named after Captain Fitzroy of the Beagle and its top pinnacle is one of the worlds hardest mountain climbs. It is a 90 mins hard slog up and a steep climb down to the viewpoint. David and Gillian were supprised on the way down to find Wendy and Willis on the way up. Wendy does not normally do treks and especially ones with steep climbs [see photo as evidence!]. We all turned around and visited the viewpoint again. That evening we had an excellent meal in our hotel [El Puma].
Wednesday 9th January; Willis, Gillian and David set off on a 10 km trek out to the glacial lake at the foot of the Torre Mountains. This had some steep climbs but was a trip through glacial and mountain geology. We had somewhat of an alarming start when we read about what to do if we met a Puma i.e. look as big as possible, shout and throw stones. We were not lucky or unluck enough to encounter one. This was the best trek of the holiday so far; before turning back we sat on glacial morain, in the sun, ate our packed lunch looking up at two glaciars and overlooking a glacial lake.
Thursday 10th; we were sad to leave El Chalten to go back to El Calafate for a flight to Ushuaia. We did manage a lunch and trip to a bird santuary on the way to the airport!
