Sunday 10th February - dramatic and taxing drive over a 54km track/road through high pass [4000m], across rivers, down narrow twisting hairpin bends to the remote village of Iruya. Great views which are difficult to capture in the photographs. We had to be rescued by passengers from the local bus from the last river only 1km short of Iruya. Gillian and Willis walked to the hotel who sent a 4 wheel drive to show us the path through the river. The hotel pays for this service; so clearly it happens often! Carnival in Iruya; masks, drinking and much merriment including throwing of water bombs [Willis took a direct hit], flour bombs and foam spray cans but all shops and even the church shut.It rained overnight.Monday 11th February - back to civilisation by the same road which is now wet and slippery. Luckily a tractor was levelling the river crossing and we had no problems except the snow and fog at the top of the pass. Temperature 2degrees rising back to 26 degrees when we returned to the main road to Jujuy. Much nervous tension expended by David the driver and passengers but all was well. On the way back we stopped at the interesting church in Uquia; this contains paintings of angels carrying guns! We re-crossed south of the Tropic of Capricorn marked by a strange sundial!
