"Gorillas in the Mist"
So, it's day 5 and I feel like I've been away for ages... We're in Kampala, the capital of Uganda and we've had some big days leading up to now. It's our first day to actually stop and get our bearings! We left Brissie on Sat morning and flew to Sydney-Perth-Johannesburg (slept) - Nairobi (prayed to not get killed) - Entebbe (Uganda). Unfortunately our luggage didn't make it as far as we did! We were greeted with the insanity that is Ugandan roads and I think I spent most of the taxi ride into town with my eyes closed and saying my prayers!
Monday, we met our lovely driver Bashir who took us on our 10hour drive to Kisoro in the country's south west. Tuesday we set off into Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for the Gorilla Trek. So the story goes that about 6 years ago 8 tourist were kidnapped from the same park by rebels from the Congo and murdered.. nice! So the trek began. We had a group of 5, some with porters for the backpacks, and with a guide front and back carrying a rifle 'just in case'... a little disconcerting to begin with! The trakkers had left at sunrise to find the gorilla family we were looking for, and thanks to cooler weather it only took an hour in to find them.
What an amazing experience!! We got to spend an hour within 6 meters of roughly 10 gorills and watch them do their thing! The Silverback (head male) wasn't overly joyed to see us and spent a full hour dropping his guts. Scared the crap out of me at one point when he jumped out of the tree to within a couple of metres of us. Words can't really describe the experience, but I'll load some photos soon!
On our return to Kampala today, we were met with our bags and finally some clean clothes and something to comb my feral hair with... the simple things in life hey?!
