Melanie's Travels - Europe 2005
Tintoretto spent 23 years of his life painting frescos at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the finished product is awe-inspiring. I had to crane my neck to see the ceilings and my neck will probably never be the same, it was worth it anyways.
Navigating in Venice is virtually impossible. I can't get anywhere without getting lost, so I have stopped even trying to navigate. To get to the Academia today I just figured out the general direction I needed to go and started walking. The Academia didn't have anything spectacular but it has been so long since I've been to an art gallery that it was still very enjoyable.
Back at the hostel I made friends with two Scots, Andy and Chazz. We played cards and later on were joined by some loud Canadians and two British girls. We all decided to leave the hostel and since Venice doesn't have much of a night life we just wandered around the city. At night San Marco becomes an outdoor café with live music. The music echoed off the square and made the entire scene seem incredibly haunting.
The group ended up splitting apart when we reached the Rialto Bridge. The Canadians went off in search of more beer and the girls went back to the hostel. Hannah and Chazz went off in pursuit of a perfect picture and Andy and I leaned against the bridge and watched the gondolas float by... Ah Venice....
