Meknes is a much newer city, founded in the 17th century but it's newness doesn't take anything away from the feeling. Here is the only other mosque that non Muslims can go into, besides Hassan II. I know, it seems like I’m starting to gleam over stuff but we saw so much; the Royal Granaries, The musee Dar Jamai, the Ramparts, the Souks, the gates and walls to the city and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. And that was just Meknes. Then we headed to Volubilis. Now we’re talking old. The Romans settled here around the 3rd century BC and it is easy to see why. Good location to defend, good source of water, fertile land. Just awesome. Of course, it’s all in ruins now but it’s in amazingly good condition. It is said that the Arc de Triumph in Paris is a copy of the one here but the French would never admit it. But what really shines are the mosaics. We’ve seen mosaics on Sicily, Pompeii and Greece and these were the best. First off, no crowds. Then their condition was still so good with such vibrant colors. Just fantastic. Now, for a quick lunch in Moulay Idriss. It’s this tiny little white town above Volubilis that seems to just hang on the hill. Turning through twisting streets, Abdul has found us a roadside BBQ place. I’m taking cats walking around your feet, flies and bees all over and some of the best kebabs we’d ever had! Lamb, beef, camel? Didn’t matter. we just ate what they put in front of us and it was wonderful! That afternoon we got back to the Riad a little early so Ryan and I struck out on our own to explore the souks a little. The only problem we had was we bought so much we really had to get creative when packing. Looking back, this was the problem with packing so light, I wish we had bought more. Tonight’s dinner was at Le Palais de Fes which is supposed to have a wonderful roof top view of the city but the lift was broken so there was no way I was climbing 4-5 flights of stairs only to come back down them. It’s wonderful place with fantastic food but had a heck of a time not letting Ryan get desert. Ahmed had arranged for a local bakery to deliver a cake to the Riad for us to have after dinner. Yummy doesn’t cover it. Walnuts, fruit sweet icing but not too heavy. We could only eat a few pieces so I told the lady who got us our plates and silverware to please share it with her fellow workers there and enjoy it.
