Breakfast at this Riad made the last place look stingy. Fresh OJ, fruit cup, pastries, crepes, yogurt and some fresh made bread that was like monkey bread. This made it easy for you wait until 2pm for lunch. Today we walked all over the old city, which was built around 800 AD and the new city, built around 1100AD. We stopped at Borj Nord, a fortress which over looks most of the old city. We saw Musee Dar el-Bartha which was a palace in the 19th century but now a museum of local crafts; ceramic, Books and manuscripts, leatherwork, wood carving and textiles. The place is huge! We visited Qarawiyin Mosque/Medersa, the oldest University in the world, founded in 859. We toured a pottery house that showed how all the pottery you see in the souks is made by hand. We visited the tannery that showed how the hides were treated, colored and made into all sorts of things. What was really fun was you go to this big room, pick out a style of coat you like, pick you the fabric and color and they take your measurements and made you a coat. Want an extra pocket? no problem. Want a higher collar? No problem. When they found out tomorrow was Ryan’s Birthday they gave him half a dozen key rings, big hugs and smiles. They were wonderful! I picked a coat and some local slippers, which Chris says makes me look like an elf but I love because they are so comfy. Since we weren’t leaving for two days, Ahmed told them to take their time with the coat, “Make it nice for Madam. Her birthday is next week”. So they delivered it to the Riad two days later. We had a full dinner at the riad tonight which was wonderful. Especially, after all the walking/hobbling we did today.
