After being in the city all day we decided that we wanted to go on a big hike and see the green hilly Ireland that people talk about. During our tour our guide said a great place to go was glendalough, which is in the national park of the wikilow mountains.
We looked it up on the computer and found that we could take a train and then a bus, however because we waited so late at night to plan it we couldn't confirm that the bus would be running, but we took the risk because we really wanted to do it.
It was an early morning for us picking up the train at 7:10. We got off the train at around 9 and realized we were in a very small rural Irish town, no busses or public transit in sight. The man who got off the train with us could tell that we were vissably lost so him an his wife tried to help us out. He said we were about 9km from where we needed to be and they tried calling us a cab. They called 3 different numbers for us and there were no answers. ( in rural Ireland apparently it's just people who drive a taxi, not companies, and they go to bed/ wake up when they feel like it). Since the tourist office was also not open, it can open anywhere between 9:30-11 depending on when they decided they want to open, the coupple gave us a ride to the national park. They said that if we were only there for the one day we had to go there because it really was beautiful, and they were right! ( I know mom&day you do not want to hear that we hitched a ride but we really had no other option, and they were genuinely nice people.. Dont worry we won't make it a habit.)
So we arrived at the park around 930 and hiked up the mountain for the next 2 hours. It was a pretty steep incline an the bugs were everywhere but it was beautiful and a much needed break after being in the city for the past few days. We then got to the other side of he mountain and it was beautiful rocket and green. There were naturally flowing rivers, deer, and we even saw a flock o sheep. By the time we finished our hike, 4 hours later, the trails were starting to get busy and we called a cab (Andy was awake by this point) an he drove us back to the train station.
We got back to Dublin and went for dinner and then went to a pub for a few hours, we were pretty tired from our active day so we didn't stay out too late.
Fun fact: the Irish flag represents the 2 prominent religions, the green is catholic and the orange/ gold is Protestant and the white is supposed to represent peace.
