Hi hi hi! Ok so the big news I have seen and walked among dinosaurs!...well giant lizards called Komodo Dragons instead. Update: On Friday after getting to airport, checking in and waiting for 2 hours, my flight was cancelled so back to my hotel in Kuta and then off to Turtle beach where there are actaully no natural turtles but there is a santuary where I got up close and personal to cute baby ones! And did some snorkelling!5am next morning went to airport and left by small propeller plane to Lubuan Bajo (small town on island of Flores and the nearest airport to Komodo).Spent day on not so nice beach and met ANOTHER gay, please dont ask me why or how, he stared at my crotch the entire time and offered a massage.I firmly declined.Sunday morning I hired a boat at 6am to take me to Rinca (part of Komodo National Park) which is where dragons are also found and it is the island next to Komodo but slightly nearer and easier to see dragons there. Dragons are only found in three islands in the world (Rinca, Komodo and one other tiny one) and they are giant lizards being born at 35cm...and growing to whopping 3.30 METRES!They kill prey by either biting and chewing to death or more commonly by just biting...and their bite carries hundreds of septic bacteria which creates blood poisoning in victim who then dies within a week.Nasty. Few attacks on humans, one fatal one a couple of years back when a swiss tourist went missing and all that was found after dragons had their way with him were his glasses and camera.Grizzly.On the way I saw a baby whale from the boat, was jet black and surfaced a few times and blew its hole tho didnt flip its tail :(.Still was good sign of things to come, never seen a whale before!ANWAY!Saw my first dragon at the harbour, was just lying there oblivious, 2.5m long.AWESOME. The walked around the island with a guide who had a heavy staff in case of attack and we saw about 10 others from small 1m ones to larger 3m ones. Luckily a buffalo had been killed by Komodos a few days ago so there were always dragons feeding on the body so I saw many more than was usual. They eat once a month and spend the day warming up in the sun morning and afternoon (and hiding during midday). They dont move very much tho when they do its the funniest thing, have a weird shambling gait where they wiggle their bums a lot.The most ungraceful walk ever!Got v v close to one which was resting..touched its tail and it was v hard and rough, but I was more than a little scared, they are known to be very unpredictable, lucky my ranger was quite easy going and ready for me to get bitten! Also saw wild pigs, water buffalo, macaque monkeys and some birds.Felt like I was in jurassic park cos of the weird landscape...vast tracts of mountainous dry savannah with tall towering palms with mangrove marshes on the fringes, all complete with walkin giant lizards!Crazy but truly memorable. On the way back by boat stopped off at the beautiful Angel Island where I went snorkeling and saw some amazing reefs, both soft and hard coral and hundreds of fish of every time including nemo’s relatives!Bck in town I went to a supermarket and felt like a celebrity cos all the girls working there stared at me and followed me around giggling and trying to say hi and smiling coyly. I felt like a stud! The reason as I later found out was nto cos im undeniably handsome and clearly irresistible...bu in fact that i had not had a chance to shave for a week so my stubble was thick and beardy and apparently this is v desirable (since most Indonesian men are not v hairy) and secondly that i have a 'long' nose..ie it is not the usually Indonesian flat one. Both of which make me very irresistible here...along with 70% of the world i imagine..ego crushed!Flew back to Kuta this morning with no problems, and flying to Philippines tomorrow though not sure what to expect after it was devasted by a super typhoon over the weekend. Might just have to fly straight out of Manilla cos of no electricity and disease. Will keep you updated! But only if you keep me updated via email!!!love and long nose hugsxxx
