Day 13. Early start from Kings Canyon back down the Red Centre Way to the Stuart Highway for the big trip up to the Alice, traditional home of the Arrernte people. Day 12. Up early and on the Lasseter Highway towards Kings Canyon Resort and Caravan Park in the Watarrka National Park. Expanses of desert oak fascinating. Arrived lunchtime, happy to have a secluded non-powered site opposite the shower block. Short drive out to Kings Canyon for the 6.6km Rim Walk. Tough climb to start but then absolutely spectacular. Day 11. Cycling around the base of Uluru 10km today and a visit to the very impressive Cultural Centre. Highlights of the ride were Mutitjulu Waterhole in its own little tree lined gorge and the Mala Walk to the rock shelters and rock paintings of the traditional Anangu people. Day 10. A day exploring Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) about 45km drive from Yalara Village. Absolutely spectacular red domes with huge gorges millions of years old! Climbed the Valley of the Winds to Karu Lookout and then up Walpa Gorge. Very sacred place to the traditional Anangu people. Learned about the local desert flora growing on the red sandhills and in the gorges - mulga, witchetty bush, upside-down bush, gidgee, Gibson desert fuchsia, desert thryptomene, spine...

Day 9. From Kulgera Roadhouse another early departure onto the Stuart Highway going North. Turned west after 74km onto the Lasseter Highway towards Yulara. No wind today so made good fuel use and distance. The highway being widened in places, no doubt to cater for many large coaches into Uluru. The road sparkling in places with some mineral?
