A quick update to tell you about our day!
We took a drive out along the King River Road this morning to look at the Prison Boab tree. Twenty two kms off the highway, along a rocky and rough dirt track, we found the huge boab tree. Apparently, it was hollowed out many, many years ago, fitted with a steel door, and used as a makeshift prison until the crooks could be moved to a proper lockup. We met another couple there that were parked near the river on the way to the boab tree. They told us that they had spotted a large croc on the river bank where they were parked, so we stopped there on the way back. The croc had gone, but we could see numerous slide marks in the muddy banks along the river, so we decided to sit and wait awhile. It didn't take too long and I spotted a croc sitting in the water with just his head up on the bank. We sat and watched as he moved along and then crawled up onto the bank. He was huge! It was a long way to the opposite bank of the King River, but I reckon he'd be almost 4 metres long. You can see in the video, by the way he pulls himself up on the bank that he is a big saltwater croc. Awesome stuff!!
Further back toward the highway we took a short detour to look at some caves that had old aboriginal art in them. We were looking through them when Kathy found a large Olive Python resting under a rock ledge. How lucky are we? A large salty and an Olive Python in one morning, fantastic! We let him be and didn't disturb him, when I crawled in under the rock ledge to get a better look I saw that his eyes were a bit milky, which is a sign that he may be ready to shed his skin soon, so I left him to rest. It was a great morning exploring, and only a short srive from Wyndham.
Later this arvo we drove up to the 5 Rivers Lookout, which we had been told by many people we were not to miss. This lookout is high above Wyndham and overlooks the landscape for miles. From here you can see where five different rivers merge together at various intervals and flow out to sea. We stayed and watched the sunrise, well worth the drive up the hill. :)
Tomorrow we are heading for the Bungle Bungles. We're looking forward to that!!
